About Stockton

Like many of the communities in the area, the city of Stockton was founded in the mid-1800s during the California Gold Rush. The city gained popularity because of its location on the San Joaquin River. Stockton is one of only two inland sea ports in the state, the other being in Sacramento. This major seaport served as an access point to the rest of the Central Valley. Today, Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County and home to more than 300,000 residents. Located an hour and half east of San Francisco and forty-five minutes south of Sacramento, residents of Stockton will find that they are never far from opportunities throughout the area. At the mouth of the California Delta, the area just beyond Stockton’s city limits is characterized by rolling acres of farmland. This productive agricultural zone is where most of America’s asparagus is grown, earning Stockton the nickname of “Asparagus Capital of America.” The region is also a major producer of grapes, citrus, pistachios, and cotton. There are also a number of cattle farms in the area.

Because of Stockton’s ideal location near Sacramento and San Francisco, it has become the home of many significant companies. This means that locals will find plenty of opportunities for work within the city. Residents also have the option to make the commute north to Sacramento or do business in the Bay Area.

Stockton is home to University of the Pacific, the oldest university in the state of California. The institution is known for its music conservatory. The Brubreck Institution can also be found at this school. Students of the institution can study jazz or learn more about jazz music and visitors can learn about Brubreck’s history.

There is always something to do in this city. Stockton is also home to the Stockton Arena where you can catch a musical act or a sporting event. The Bob Hope Theatre is a great place to enjoy a show, and the Haggin Museum has lots of information on Stockton's roots.
